I’ve had my fair share of battles with having a thankful heart as a wife and mom (when you hate your life your not thankful about much), but here’s what I’ve learned over the years: Thankfulness is, by far, one of the most important attributes we have as wives and moms. It is one of the most powerful tools we have at our disposal to build our homes. And here’s why…
A thankful heart demonstrates that I trust God. Offering thanks to God, no matter what is going on on our lives, is a way of acknowledging that he knows exactly what he is doing and that we can trust him. when we complain about our health or finances or whatever it may be, we are declaring, whether we realize it or not, that God isn’t handling our affairs very well.
A thankful heart produces a joyful outlook on life. Gratitude creates an awareness of just how much God has truly blessed us. And when we acknowledge God’s goodness in our lives, our hearts overflow with joy!
A thankful heart also produces contentment. It reminds us that what we have in this moment – our job, our neighborhood, our home, and our loved ones – are all undeserved blessings from God, and they are enough.
Peter tells us that because of Jesus, our hearts are “filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy” (1 Peter 1:8), but sometimes thankfulness is a choice we make rather than a feeling we have. This is why even when we don’t feel joyful, we can cultivate a joyful heart by expressing thanksgiving to God.
If we lack joy and contentment (by-products of a thankful heart), our homes are not likely to ever be described as “heaven on earth.” Thankfully, when we express thanksgiving to God, we are less likely to have a bitter or critical spirit, which are two ungodly attitudes which help the “foolish” woman to tear down her home (see Proverbs 14:1).
Girlfriend, thanksgiving produces a home where children thrive and husbands are happy. Tell God and your family what you’re thankful for today!
