I’ve had my fair share of battles with maintaining a thankful heart as a wife and mom (when you struggle with hating your life, that tends to happen), but if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years it’s this: Thankfulness is, by far, one of the most important attributes we can possess in family life; it is one of the most powerful tools we have in building our homes. And here’s why…
A thankful heart is evidence that we trust God.
When we complain about our health or marriage or whatever it may be, we are declaring, whether we realize it or not, that God isn’t handling our affairs very well. God is pleased when he sees our willingness to give thanks in spite of our circumstances because it demonstrates our trust in his goodness and our willingness to let him handle the affairs of our lives.
A thankful heart produces a joyful outlook on life.
Gratitude creates an awareness of just how much God has truly blessed us. And when we acknowledge God’s goodness in our lives, our hearts overflow with joy!
A thankful heart produces contentment.
It reminds us that what we have in this moment – our job, our neighborhood, our home, and our loved ones – are all undeserved blessings from God, and they are enough.
Peter tells us that because of Jesus, our hearts are “filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy” (1 Peter 1:8), and even when we don’t feel joyful, we can cultivate joy by expressing thanksgiving to God.
If we are not thankful we will not be joyful or content, and our homes are not likely to ever be described as “heaven on earth” if we don’t possess these attributes. Also, when we are thankful we are less likely to have a bitter or critical spirit, which are no doubt, two ungodly attitudes which the “foolish” woman uses to tear down her home (Proverbs 14:1).
Girlfriend, thanksgiving produces a home where children thrive and husbands are happy. Tell God and your family what you’re thankful for today!
